With a plot set in Japan in 1900, Madama Butterfly is one of the most exotic works in the repertoire, but also one of the most melancholic (a yearning for a lover to return, disillusionment, and the tragic fate of the heroine). Puccini gives a dazzling demonstration of his orchestration skills in which the nuances and atmosphere of Cio Cio San’s feelings are depicted with finesse. In the summer of 2016, the Théâtre Antique d’Orange hosted this masterpiece by Puccini for the first time in its history. A stellar cast was assembled for the performance: Ermonela Jaho gave a wonderful performance as the wounded heroine who falls victim to Bryan Hymel’s cowardly Pinkerton, with Marie-Nicole Lemieux in the gentle and kind role of Suzuki. The same cast will be reunited in full for this performance in Paris with the Philharmonique de Radio France under the baton of Mikko Franck.
