Brahms Concerto for violin op. 77
Tchaïkovski Symphony No. 4
Yuri Temirkanov and his St Petersburg Orchestra take us into the midst of Romanticism for the latest concert in their string of regular appearances. They kick off in grand style with the “king of violin concertos” by Brahms, a major work in the concerto repertoire, which requires fiendish agility from the soloist. This is followed by Tchaikovsky’s last three symphonies, a trilogy which focuses exclusively on man as he confronts his fate, and the musician pushes this theme to the limits with the closing Pathétique. Part two of this masterclass in Romanticism takes place tomorrow evening.
