Tchaïkovski Concerto for violin
Symphony No. 5
A second evening of Tchaikovsky from the St Petersburg Orchestra, with two more pieces which are among the composer’s most popular works. The concerto is one of the most frequently performed and recorded pieces. It is so famous because it reflects his maturity as an orchestral composer and the soloist is perfectly integrated into the texture of the music. All the elements blend together harmoniously and expressively, from the depths of tragedy to the heights of joy. As was the case with Brahms yesterday, this is a long-standing element of Julia Fischer’s repertoire and she brings an impressive energy and sensitivity to it. The Fifth Symphony pursues the composer’s metaphysical speculations, demonstrating his understanding of the art of writing for orchestra with great flair.
