An unprecedented high-level encounter at the Théâtre between a brace of Russian giants which promises to be fascinating, as these two artists have very different personalities but both share an outstanding level of energy in their commitment to their music. Jansons conducting his beloved Bavarian Radio Orchestra will undoubtedly be at his elegiac best in Schumann’s Symphony No. 1, appropriately dubbed the “spring” symphony, and will then swing along with Bernstein, in what is a more unusual repertoire for him. We are convinced that Denis Matsuev will be extremely comfortable with Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody, a majestic and demanding work comprising 24 variations on the theme of Paganini’s 24th Caprice for violin.
