Approximative running Time 1h10 – Opera sung in French

Il Barbiere di Siviglia is a pure masterpiece of the operatic repertoire. Running in tandem with Laurent Pelly’s fresh reading of Rossini’s key work in December, a young cast is devising a “lite” version of the opera in French, lasting approximately one hour, offering school children what is probably their first introduction to opera with a frame of reference to which they can relate. Playwright Gilles Rico has written an adaptation and translation of the libretto, with a strong emphasis on preserving the comedic element. In collaboration with director Damien Robert, the stage is filled with a fusion of pop, modern and expressive imagery, underscored by the frenetic pace of the passionate love story. They play with the conventions of opera (which are sometimes subverted, but remain the central focus of their production) and take the audience into a new, fun world in which the basic plot line is still clearly discernible to all. Clever use of staging effects allows the audience to follow the sequence of situations and young Rosine’s aspiration to freedom is given full expression in the space. The musicians in the pit from the Orchestre de chambre de Paris conducted by Adrien Perruchon play their part in this dazzling initiation. All these elements are designed to allow a young audience to savour the appeal of opera while offering a modern reading adapted specially for them.
