The 200 or so videos posted on her personal Facebook page and her 85,000 followers have made Ukrainian pianist Valentina Lisitsa a phenomenon who has enabled young people to hear and enjoy the classical repertoire. However, it would be reductive to refer to this pianist whom the Wall Street Journal dubbed “the Justin Bieber of the classical piano” as merely an internet phenomenon. If YouTube marked the starting point of her unconventional route to success, the performer has since proved her talent in traditional live concerts and recitals in the most prestigious venues (Carnegie Hall, Avery Fischer Hall, Royal Albert Hall) and been hailed by eminent and feared critic Norman Lebrecht, who immediately recognized her “undeniably assertive playing”.
