Beethoven Sonata No. 1 for cello and piano
Schumann 5 Pieces in Folk Style for cello and piano opus 102
Britten Sonata for cello and piano op. 65
This very close duo is in sparkling form. Sol Gabetta’s cello playing brims with energy and is in perfect harmony with the masterly piano of Bertrand Chamayou. In concert after concert, they revisit the repertoire with enthusiasm and boldness, and are not averse to taking risks at all times. Britten’s Sonata, with its five short movements, is particularly elegant. It was created by Rostropovich and the composer in 1961, and is a rare work of great interest.
As performers, Gabetta and Chamayou rise to the challenges of this programm.
